CLEAN DIESEL: 5 BENEFITS OF BIOFUELS

The benefits of biofuels cannot go unnoticed. See how biofuels can improve the air, your engine, and the environment.

If you’ve been paying even the slightest bit of attention in recent years, you’ll know that traditional use of fossil fuels and gas have had devastating effects on the environment. Oil spills destroy land and ocean environments, changing temperatures and weather wreak havoc on many ecosystems, and we’re in the middle of a mass extinction event.

What can you do to reduce your impact? One way is through the use of alternative fuels, like biofuels.

What are the benefits of biofuels? Keep reading to learn about 5 of the top advantages of biodiesel.

1. Reduced Emissions

When you burn fossil fuels, greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfates, methane, hydrocarbons, and toxins are released into the atmosphere. These gases lead to unnatural warming of the planet, which can destroy ecosystems, change weather patterns, and hurt the environment.

Biodiesel results in reduced emission of these dangerous greenhouse gases and toxins. It also releases 85% fewer carcinogens compared to traditional petroleum diesel.

2. Safer for the Environment

Besides reducing greenhouse gas emissions, biofuels are less toxic to the environment.

Most biodiesels are derived from vegetable and/or animal oils/fats, which makes them natural and non-toxic. If it’s spilled in the ocean or on land, it won’t have the devastating impact the oil and diesel has.

In fact, biodiesel on at least 5 times less toxic than petrofuels.

Biofuels are also biodegradable in both soil and water and degrade 4 times faster than diesel.

3. Better for Your Engine

Not only is biodiesel better for the environment, but it’s actually better at lubricating and protecting your engine than traditional diesel.

It’s also easily used. All engines can use biodiesel and biodiesel blends; no adjustments or additions required.

4. Recycles Waste Products

Vegetable oil, fats, grease, cooking oil, and other waste products are often discarded and go unused in landfills or into animal feed. These waste products that would normally be thrown away can now be recycled into useable fuel and energy instead of clogging up yet another landfill.

5. Superior Energy Balance

“Energy balance” refers to the ratio between how much energy something produces to how much energy it takes to make something. So, for example, if it takes you two hours to prepare a meal that will give you 5 hours of energy, the energy balance ratio would be 5:2 or an energy balance of 2.5.

For fuels, the higher the ratio, the more renewable it is and the lower the impact it has on the environment.

Biofuels have a superior energy balance ratio of 3.2 units of energy created for every one unit of energy needed to make it (3.2:1). Diesel fuel creates 0.83 units of energy for every 1 unit of energy needed to create it (0.83:1).
